We realised that a simple change to the way we source our sugar supplies could result in a significant reduction in the need for plastic packaging. We were previously purchasing around 75kg of Fairtrade granulated white and brown sugar per year in packets of 1kg in boxes of six wrapped in plastic. Each of these packets was then decanted into stainless steel dispensers which were filled daily and cleaned weekly.
To reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging, particularly the plastic wrapping, we sourced organic raw cane sugar supplied in 25kg paper bags which can be recycled and has resulted in a complete reduction of the plastic waste associated with this.
Buying larger quantities of sugar also resulted in a cost-saving of around 40p per kg, representing a saving of around £30 per year. While this might only be a nominal saving, it does mean it is cheaper for us to use the sustainable option which means everyone is happy!
