Our dedicated team of event professionals have been placing sustainability at the centre of every decision since 15Hatfields opened in 2008, as the official venue of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Amy has been part of the 15Hatfields events team for a decade, over which time she has built a thorough understanding of how to run a sustainable event. Alongside her personal passion, Amy has been able to find ways for 15Hatfields to evolve and become a pioneer in the sustainable event space. Keep reading to find out more about Amy and what you can expect from Amy’s Aims.
Hello! Amy here, writing from the Tidal room at 15Hatfields in London’s South Bank. I’ve been on the events team at 15Hatfields for 10 years now. As an events assistant with a personal passion for sustainability, what attracted me to a role at the venue was the team’s ambition to transform an industry which had become synonymous with waste. Over the past decade, I’ve been keen to demonstrate that running a sustainable event is not only possible, but a necessity for the future.
To me, sustainability means being aware of how our actions affect the world around us and making positive changes that will support, rather than endanger, future generations, wildlife, and the planet. Over the years, I’ve been involved in a variety of local initiatives and campaigns striving for change across the events industry. While on the 15Hatfields team, I’ve given away native saplings, herb seeds and seed bombs to help rejuvenate wildflowers in urban areas. I’ve helped to source plastic free alternatives as part of our industry-wide Make Plastic History campaign and in recent years I’ve been involved in sourcing food items and cleaning products that do not contain palm oil.
Being sustainable day-to-day covers many areas including energy efficiency, renewables, refillables, recycling and upcycling. I’m in charge of recycling ‘hard-to-recycle’ items and finding new homes for items no longer needed at the venue. Posting items that can be used again on Freecycle is a great way to make sure things are reused and not just thrown away. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure after all! I also send our used nitrile gloves, pens and bottle lids to TerraCycle, a company that recycles items that can’t be put in our normal recycling boxes. When we recycle with TerraCycle, we earn points which are then redeemed into a money donation for a chosen charity – ours is Plastic Oceans UK which is fighting to end plastic pollution in our oceans.
If you’re interested in keeping up to date with what we get up to here at 15Hatfields, follow us on social media! Over the next year, I’ll be shedding light on aspects of sustainable event management including food waste reduction, switching to reusables, recycling dos and don’ts and saving energy. So do give us a follow to find out about sustainable practices at the venue and how we can work together to do our bit for our wonderful planet.
