Around 22% of the UK's carbon emissions come from our homes, and they have a costly effect on our planet and our pockets. We want to help you reduce your carbon footprint while alleviating some of the pressure of exponential energy price hikes. The following list has been gleaned from a combination of our own experiences running 15Hatfields and our latest research top energy-saving tips.
Listing simple energy-saving hacks without addressing 'standby mode' is almost impossible. We don't want to sound like nagging parents, but this age-old advice is still relevant today. You can save around £40 a year just by turning your appliances off instead of using standby mode. Consumer electronics, such as laptops, TVs and game consoles account for 7% of energy bills, so switching them off completely when not in use will have a significant impact.
Draught-proofing your home is one of the cheapest ways to make sure your hard-earned heating keeps you toasty throughout the winter. Draught excluders are great for keeping out the cold - you can make your own by recycling an old pair of jeans and stuffing them with other unwanted clothes.
On average, each person in the UK uses around 145 litres of water daily. While baths are a great way to relax and unwind, they could be increasing your carbon footprint. Not only do they require more water, but they often require more energy to heat too. Try having a five-minute shower instead - this uses about a third of the water used in a bath. Also, replacing your showerhead with a water-efficient one could save on your gas and water bills!
A slightly more expensive way to reduce your carbon footprint and save energy at home is to invest in solar panels. By installing solar panels, you can generate your own renewable electricity, save money on bills, and contribute to a greener planet. At 15Hatfields, we introduced solar panels and, we have not looked back! Now all our events are powered by the sun. Why not consider going the extra mile and invest in your own greener future?
Opting for motion-sensitive lights or lights on timers that you can control from your phone apps is a great way to save electricity. The lights in our washrooms and the kitchen are all motion-sensitive, saving energy when they are not in use. Some great mod-cons can make your house super-efficient on a budget!
By taking small steps to save energy in our daily lives, we can all create a more sustainable future - together.
