Overview

Module three in our ship sanitation series will discuss sewage treatment and ballast water systems. Perhaps the least glamorous aspects of ship operations, these systems are an important component of sanitation inspections.

Using practical examples, plans and photographs, we will look at systems that can be found in most types of ships from cargo to cruise. Practical knowledge will be provided about how various components work, typical issues that arise, and the necessary international standards to be applied.

Objectives

• Discuss the various components of ship sewage and ballast systems and their purpose
• Consider common issues that arise and risks to look out for
• Understand the role of international standards such as: WHO's Handbook for Inspection of Ships and Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificates
• Increase your confidence when investigating such systems to verify their correct operation
