Bitesize training: effective regulatory decision-making

Overview

This Bitesize training event looks at key issues that affect a wide range of regulatory actions made under delegated authority.

Most Council regulatory decisions are made by officers under delegated authority. Officers are expected to take account of a wide range of issues including Human Rights and Equality impacts, and the validity of their decision will often depend on the quality of the information available. Delegated decisions both to take and not to take action can be challenged in several ways.

In this Bitesize session, we will cover:

  • Common mistakes
  • Gaps in knowledge and policies
  • Difficulties in defending decisions against legal challenges

Outcomes

  • Recognise and avoid common mistakes when making decisions
  • Understand key legal issues that can be used for challenges
  • Learn how to make better, more defensible regulatory decisions

Who should attend?

This training session is designed for all professional officers and others who exercise delegated powers in their own name or who prepare case reports for a formal decision by a line manager.

What past delegates thought:

  • "Speaker - impressive knowledge."
  • "The topic of decision-making is so important to the profession, but it is rarely discussed, I'm pleased that this now provided."
  • "The information on what details need to be published, the case studies / service of notices were really useful."

CPD: 2 hours and 30 minutes
