This two-day practical training workshop is a not to be missed opportunity for professionals with responsibility for enforcing fire safety standards in rented housing including HMOs, single family dwellings, hostels and flats above shops.

Delegates will learn how to actively consider all factors which contribute to the risk of harm from fire in domestic residential properties. They will be shown the various formats in which Fire Risk Assessments are presented and learn how to evaluate their contents. Delegates are encouraged to bring their own cases for consideration by the group.

Paul Fitzgerald 

Paul qualified as an Environmental Health Officer in 1979 and has worked for a number of Inner London and 2 rural authorities, specialising in private sector housing. Paul has also worked for a Residential Social Landlord as a maintenance manager, dealing with routine, cyclical and project management. Since 1995 Paul has worked as a consultant in this field, carrying out, managing and quality assessing stock condition surveys, working for both public and private sector landlords on specific projects or providing staff cover. He set up his own company in 1998.

After leaving school, Paul was one of the first students to obtain a B.Sc.(Hons) in Environmental Health at the University of Greenwich, gaining further qualifications with a Diploma in Management Studies from Kingston University and in Quality Assurance Assessment.

Paul has been involved with the implementation of the Housing Health and Safety Hazard Rating System since its inception in 1999 to date. He is a University of Warwick Trainer for the system, having helped deliver over 100 courses on the assessment and enforcement of the system.

Paul is currently employed as a Principal Environmental Health Officer for the London Borough of Sutton dealing with all aspects of Private Sector Housing, taking the lead on HMO Inspections and Licensing.

Phil Barry  

A highly experienced fire safety professional with 30 years experience as a senior fire safety officer in UK local authority fire services working in London, Wales and Bristol. Phil specialised in fire safety since 1999, developing and delivering the highest standard of fire safety training. He completed three secondments as a senior instructor in fire safety at the UK Fire Service College.

Phil established CWB Fire Safety Consultants Ltd. in 2006. and worked as a self-employed fire safety consultant since 2006, advising clients on a wide variety of fire safety projects, new build consultations, risk assessments and reviews for a diverse range of buildings.

Phil is now an associate tutor for both The Fire Service College & The Fire Protection Association and continues to develop and deliver the highest standard of fire safety training. He is a technical consultant for The Fire Protection Association, carrying out fire risk assessments and fire safety related projects on their behalf and is also a registered fire risk assessor with the Institution of Fire Engineers.
